A good coach needs to be a good mentor so the student knows what to do. If a coach can’t teach then the student can’t get better or learn. Mentors also can’t give to much praise because the person who’s learning may think they learned all that’s needed.

To start right off I believe that to be a good teacher he should be able to be a good mentor for the pupil. The reason I believe this is because if the teacher has the mind of the student. The student will be able to do more for the teacher. Some of the qualities for a good coach are being assertive, but still being kind, being skillful at the sport or knowing a lot about it. Also to give everyone (if more than one) the equal amount of attention for each pupil. I have a question. Does El Gato have an enemy or obstacle? I don’t believe he does. Respond back

The best coaches have great personalities. I think to be a good coach you need to be tuff on the players. You also need be able to push the player really hard. I think as a coach you also need to be a good mentor. A coach has to be able to support the kids in any sport. Like if you didn’t score the game winning goal or something then your coach should support you. I think that these are a lot of the qualities that make a good coach. I also think this book is really good.

There are many reasons why a coach needs to be a good mentor. I think that if whoever is being coached by a coach the coach needs help with something the coach should take ownership and give him some help. You can’t be a coach if you don’t know about what you are coaching, so if you coach soccer like the Keeper does to Gato you need to know all the tips in the book to give him any feedback he might need. What makes up the best coach is the one that is slightly strict, very knowledgeable, and can convey his thoughts simply.

I think that a good coach would be a good mentor too because, if he/she is just coaching you and not giving you instructions on how to do things, then you will not really get any better or know how to do things. The best qualities of the best coaches are they are good mentors, they help keep you going, they always tell you that you can even if you think you can’t, and they will never let you give up until you have given it your best effort.

I think a good coach would also be a good mentor. There are many things that a coach can teach you but a mentor helps you learn them. A coach tells you but a mentor explains and shows you how to do them. A mentor sets an example for you to follow. If the coach can't teach the student properly then the student will not learn as much. With a mentor they teach but also explain and show you how to do them correctly.

Hmm. . . do you guys understand the differenct between the words "coach" and "mentor?" Many of you say that the most important qualities in a coach are knowledge of the sport and firm fairness on the playing field. I agree, but I wonder, too, if good coaches (or teachers, for that matter)so teach their players something about how to be a good wo/man that moves beyond the sport itself. Chris Y. started his comment with the assertion that good coaches have good personalities-- okay, but should we learn something about having a good personality as well as having a good game from our coaches??

I agree with Mrs. Leonard. A mentor would do more than teach you how to play a sport and how to improve; a mentor would teach you how to be a good person, how to learn from mistakes and move on, etc... Do all coaches do this?

Mrs. Leonard is right. We should be able to learn and grow from our coaches. Although some of them are assertive some should be nice and be able not only to help you learn, but make sure you have a fun time doing it. I also agree with Ms. Steven that a coach should teach kids to learn from their mistakes. But then if the pupil makes the mistake again and again should the coach get angry, or continue to be nice and give more helpful advice. 2nd if the mentor is the coach should he show different sides or show same affection to all except to his student. I do believe he should show all niceness. Do you agree?

I think that a coach hast to be a good mentor. This is because the athlete hast to respect the coach and hast to believe that the coach will be able to teach you a lot, and make you a star. If the coach were not a good mentor than the athlete wouldn’t learn anything. He would think everything is stupid and wouldn’t get anything. A good coach should be strict and confident in his player for success!!

I think that a good coach needs to be a mentor. Mentors are more role models. Not role models for athleticism, but for being a good person. Coaches are meant to teach how to excel and succeed in sports. I believe that good coaches need to be good mentors because coaches are looked up to as role models and they need to have more to offer than just athletics. Good coaches need to be mentors too because they need to have good sport skills, but also good character.

I think a good coach has to be a good a good mentor or else he fails as a coach. The coach is teaching him the ways and rules of the game or sport that the player is playing. He is teaching him the game and if he is not a good mentor the player will do what he does and not be a good person either.

I think a good coach knows everything about the sport and how to play it. But I think a great coach is also great mentor and is able to teach life lessons within the sport. He or she should be firm and tough on players like the keeper is on Gato. I think a great coach should be a great mentor if they want to succeed in making there players great.
